This collaboration leverages the established partnership between Robert Morris University and MECCO with a new partner, Data Science Automation, to develop a comprehensive library of laser color marking profiles integrated into MECCO’s WinLase software and explore automation and optimization in laser manufacturing applications. RMU students will conduct extensive testing using various MECCO lasers and common materials to determine optimized parameters for color palettes. This builds upon RMU’s preliminary corrosion studies of laser-marked blue hues on metal. The methodology involves quantifying color values using specialized cameras and image analysis software to build a color library. This project also supports continued research and development in laser welding as a critical subtask, ensuring RMU and MECCO continue to lead domestic manufacturing innovation. The inclusion of DSA will leverage their LabVIEW experience to explore opportunities to automate portions of the marking or welding experimental process or optimization of the end user experience.
