PA-RoboCharge: promoting advanced manufacturing of underwater robotics via contactless charging systems

Principal investigator: Hua Zhang

University: Lehigh University

Industry partners: VideoRay LLC

This project advances Pennsylvania’s manufacturing economy by enabling a PA-based robotics manufacturer to translate university research into practical, production-relevant technology. Through a close collaboration between Lehigh University and a Pennsylvania manufacturer of underwater robotic systems, the project addresses a key industry challenge: efficient and reliable battery charging for commercial underwater vehicles. The project focuses on cylindrical autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) that are widely used in current robotic products. The team will design, build, and test a contactless underwater charging subsystem that allows faster and more reliable charging without physical connectors, reducing downtime and maintenance effort. The expected outcomes include a validated charging module, engineering documentation, and integration guidelines that support future product evaluation and potential incorporation into Pennsylvania-based manufacturing operations. In parallel, the project provides hands-on training opportunities for students, helping develop a skilled workforce to support the next generation of robotics and advanced manufacturing in Pennsylvania.
